There aren’t many movies that make me laugh so much that I’ll watch them twice. There also aren’t many movies that shake me emotionally so much that I’ll shed tears multiples times. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a movie that did both, though – until now.

Moms’ Night Out, which opens Friday, is one of the funniest movies you’ll ever see, along with one of the most moving. It’s a film that does for moms what Courageous did for dads – that is, uplift, inspire and encourage mothers to better fulfill their God-given role. It’s a celebration of moms.

I watched a screener of it one night with my wife, laughed hysterically and cried a few times, and went to bed amazed at what I had just seen. The next night, I watched it again, laughed hysterically again and cried some more, again.

It’s that good.

It may be the best faith-based movie yet, but honestly, it doesn’t seem fair even to say that. Moms’ Night Out simply is a great movie that has a faith message and plenty of crossover appeal.

Who will like it? Anyone who has a child, who’s ever had a child, who has taken care of a child, or has watched in interest and horror a child at Walmart have an Aisle 6 meltdown.

It tells the story of a stressed-out mom who has small children and simply wants a night out, with her friends, but without the kids. She gets that night out, but it begins falling apart early on.

Plenty of parents will see moments in the movie and think to themselves, “That’s me.” I know my wife and I did.

Here are three reasons it’s the greatest comedy you’ve never seen:

1. It’s hilarious. Sure, comedies are always supposed to be funny, but it doesn’t always turn out that way, does it? I say that as someone who can count on one hand the number of movies that made me laugh. No doubt, it’s funny in part because of an amazing and funny cast. Among the mainstream names: Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy), Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Sean Astin (The Lord of The Rings and Rudy). It also stars faith-based staples as Robert Amaya (Courageous) and Alex Kendrick (Courageous, Facing the Giants). Singer Trace Adkins also has a major role. Heaton, who was hilarious on Everybody Loves Raymond, is every bit as funny in this film. But she has plenty of company.

2. It’s uplifting. And convicting. It’s directed by the same brothers (the Erwins) who gave us October Baby and brought to us by the same companies (Provident and Affirm) who gave us Courageous and Fireproof. It’s a comedy with a message, and the script is amazing. How many comedies encouraged you? Moms will cry. Dads, too. But even if you don’t cry, that’s OK. You’ll get plenty of laughs.

3. It’s clean. Let’s face it, the number of good clean comedies can be counted on, well, one hand. Today, “comedy” essentially equals raunchy. We’ve fallen so far as a society that we have to market “clean comedians” and “clean joke books.” Moms’ Night Out is clean. No language, no sexuality. You can take your entire family and all the members of your congregation. Or you can volunteer to babysit some kids and let parents of children have their own “night out.” They won’t regret it. And later, you should go see it, too. You won’t regret it, either.
